Why is Donald Rumsfeld Secretary of Defense instead of Colin Powell a man with far more military and combat experience? Powell was the strategist who planned and then successfully executed that plan during the first Gulf War.
Powell insisted that we have a clear plan including an exit strategy before going to war with Iraq. Powell also told Bush and Rumsfeld that only way to win the war and stabilize Iraq was to use overwhelming force as we did in the first gulf war. Of course, Bush and Rumsfeld thought they knew better. Cheney and Rumsfeld were of the opinion that the once the initial military objectives were met that we would be welcomed with open arms as liberators.
Why were the generals who advised Bush and Rumsfeld to follow the Powell Doctrine and use overwhelming force, pushed aside or out of the military? If Bush had followed Powell?s advice we would have had the troops necessary to prevent the violence and chaos that broke out after ?major military operations ended?.
There is a pattern here, they didn't listen to Paul O'Neill on the economy or Richard Clarke on terrorist threats, or Colin Powell on defense. You have seen the results of their failure to accept expert advice.
Bush and his cronies just don't listen and thousands of Americans "
