Galileo Galilei was one of the truly greatest of scientists of all time. His books were banned by the Catholic church in the year 1632 and it wasn't until 1979 that the Pope admitted that the Catholic church erred its treatment of him.
On a related note, the Catholic church continued officially to deny the Copernican theory until 1922 (that being that the Earth rotates around the Sun and the Earth is not the center of the universe).
This is the EXACT same type of logic that Bush and his puppetmasters in the religious right are using today. "
